All AI models require training data. So far, companies have collected data from websites, YouTube videos, books, audio sources, and more, but this is perhaps the first weâve heard of AI training data collected through a mobile gaming app.
âOver the past five years, Niantic has focused on building our Visual Positioning System (VPS), which uses a single image from a phone to determine its position and orientation using a 3D map built from people scanning interesting locations in our games and Scaniverse,â Niantic wrote in a company blog post.

Google Gemini seems to keep having serious issues. From the early racial biases, to reliability issues, and now this. AI models are supposed to have something that industry refers to as "guard rails" that prevents them from engaging in topics that are illegal or considered inappropriate. For example, when you ask it anything about how to do something illegally, or you ask for advice about health or legal matters, it almost always either tells you it can't help, or it constantly reminds you to seek out the advice of professionals.
Of course if you use an AI model like Grok (Elon Musk's AI on X), it has almost no guard rails because he believes anyone should be able to do whatever they want, including creating deep fake, inappropriate conent.
It's always important to remember that when using any of these models, they all have their own quirks and interpretive guard rails, but you should always verify any information, and be sure that when creating generative AI content to understand the associated laws especially when it comes to copyright. We are very excited to be in talks with an organization in central Africa about bringing AI courses to the people there. As Africa is starting to organize and mobilize towards economic independence, becoming a continent that gets involved on the ground floor, it has the opportunity with AI that India had with software development in the early 2000's. We hope to keep pursuing this opportunity and potentially deliver courses to areas that empower African people to find new opportunities to thrive. We are also pursuing opportunities in Japan and Australia.
